I’m a researcher at OpenAI, where I work on health and RL. I’m also a faculty member at the University of Calgary.
I joined OpenAI in November 2023 and was an early member of the Health AI team, helping stand up our efforts to improve model understanding of human health and performance in health settings. My public work includes HealthBench, a health evaluation used across the industry; substantial improvements to OpenAI model performance in health; and one of the first studies of clinicians using language models in live patient care.
Before OpenAI:
- I co-founded and was CTO of Alethea Medical, a digital health platform now used by 50% of family physicians in Alberta.
- I did a PhD in Engineering Science at the University of Oxford, where I was a Rhodes Scholar.
- As a first-year PhD student, I joined the faculty of the University of Calgary to lead a research group in epidemiology.
- Our group’s work became a core source of COVID infection and immunity data for the World Health Organization and several government agencies.
- We also studied how to automate meta-analysis, a direction some team members have continued by starting Otto SR.
- Along the way, my research group raised nearly $2M USD in funding and published more than 20 papers.
